Underfloor heating, powered by green electricity and an air-source heat pump, keeps the house warm during the cooler months, while wide glass doors and wraparound terraces bring the outside in throughout the summer.

- Sunnybrook's History: Sunnybrook has been a labour of love from the very beginning, converted from a stable to a luxury carbon-neutral holiday retreat. Nick grew up in nearby Shaldon and spent years walking past this little stable, imagining what it might one day become. It sat in an extraordinary spot, tucked into the hillside with views across the valley, surrounded by wildlife and just a short walk from the beach. Years later, the property unexpectedly came up for auction. Neither of us had ever bought anything at auction before, apart from the odd purchase on eBay, but we knew this was an opportunity we couldn't let pass. We took a deep breath, placed our bid, and, after what felt like an endless purchasing process, collected the keys at the end of April. Standing there for the first time as owners, we realised there was a huge amount of work ahead. The building itself was structurally sound, but it was still very much a stable. The surrounding field had disappeared beneath a thick blanket of brambles, shrubs and years of neglect. Every day seemed to reveal another surprise. Hidden beneath the undergrowth was an old builder's hut. Clearing the land became the first challenge, with friends and family joining us to battle brambles, burn enormous piles of cuttings and slowly uncover the landscape that had been hidden for years. One of the most satisfying moments came when the view finally opened up. As the vegetation disappeared, we could see the setting sun across the valley for the first time. We uncovered the brook, repaired a leaking dam and even created a small pond along the way. From there, the real transformation began. Walls came down to create open living spaces. Underfloor heating was installed throughout. A vaulted ceiling and mezzanine level brought light and height into the old building. Every stage brought new decisions, new challenges, and, occasionally, new expenses that hadn't been included in the original budget. Like most building projects, this one took longer than expected and cost more than we'd planned, but we never lost sight of what we were trying to create. We wanted Sunnybrook to be beautiful, comfortable and as environmentally responsible as possible. Sustainability became part of almost every decision. We installed an air-source heat pump, underfloor heating, extensive insulation, a rainwater harvesting system, a modern sewage treatment plant, and solar photovoltaic panels. The timber and aluminium windows were chosen for their outstanding thermal performance, while the cedar cladding, recyclable materials and carefully considered construction all helped reduce the building's environmental impact. We were fortunate to work with an exceptional group of local tradespeople whose craftsmanship brought the project to life. Alongside them were family and friends who gave up weekends, cleared brambles, moved earth, painted walls, planted lawns and generally kept us smiling through the more challenging days. Slowly, the stable began to feel like a home. The German kitchen was fitted. The handcrafted staircase was installed. The cedar cladding transformed the outside of the building. Patios took shape, the lawns were seeded, and the large picture windows framed the countryside exactly as we had imagined all those years before. There were plenty of memorable moments along the way. The arrival of the sewage treatment plant, affectionately nicknamed the "SS Poo Poo". The first cedar board being fixed into place. Waiting impatiently for the lawn to grow. The first snowfall after completion. Even something as simple as sitting down to our first meal at Sunnybrook, pizza and salad surrounded by tools and fresh paint, felt like a milestone. Finally, after eight months of building, planning, problem-solving, and sheer hard work, Sunnybrook was ready to welcome its first guests. Today, guests often tell us how peaceful it feels here. Close enough to stroll down to the beach or the village pub in around twenty minutes, yet with the feeling of being completely removed from the pace of everyday life. Looking back at these photographs reminds us just how far Sunnybrook has come. What began as an overgrown stable has become the place we always hoped it would be, somewhere to slow down, spend time together and make lasting memories.
